Express preferences
How to express preferences?
- LIKE: I like chatting on WhatsApp.
- HATE: I hate WhatsApp.
- ENJOY: I enjoy playing video games on Twitch.
- LOVE: I love YouTube.
- DON’T LIKE: I don’t like uploading photos on Instagram.
- PREFER: I prefer Tik Tok.
Now you know that we can express our preferences using the verbs: love, like, hate, enjoy, prefer or don’t like.
Look at the chart for first and second person: I, you, we, they.
We can use the verbs like, hate, enjoy, love, don’t like and prefer with a noun or with the – ing form of a verb.
For example:
- Verb plus noun: I like WhatsApp.
- Verb plus –ING: People like chatting on WhatsApp.
Now, look at the chart for third person: he, she, it
Remember: We add “s” to the verb of preference and the auxiliary doesn’t for the negative form.
For example:
- Verb plus noun: He likes Instagram.
- Verb plus -ING: She likes looking at photos on Instagram.
And some examples for the negative form:
- He doesn’t like Instagram.
- She doesn’t like looking at photos on Instagram
QUESTIONS
Look at the chart:
In questions, we put the auxiliary verb «do» before the following subjects: they, we, you and I. These are yes/no questions.
Remember: Yes or no questions are questions whose expected answer is either «yes» or «no».
For example:
- Do they like chatting on WhatsApp?
- There are two possible answers: Yes, they do or No, they don’t.
Kinds of short answers:
According to the subject used in each question you can say:
- Yes, I do. Yes, you do. Yes, we do. Yes, they do. If the answer is affirmative.
- No, I don’t. No, you don’t. No, we don’t. No, they don’t. If the answer is negative.

- Legend: I don’t believe in the legend of the sword.
- Speech: The speaker gave a moving speech at the graduation ceremony.
- Science fiction (sci fi): Some kids don’t like reading science fiction books.
- Horror: My brother doesn’t like horror books.
- Historical: My teacher likes reading historical book collections.
- Realistic: When I was a child, I hated cartoon characters in realistic versions.
- Narrative essay: He doesn’t like writing narrative essays.
